OpenText history

Founded as a University of Waterloo in Canada project, OpenText has grown into the global market leader in Information Management.

1991

The University of Waterloo and Oxford University partner to create the first online Oxford English Dictionary. The resulting University of Waterloo spin-off, OpenText, incorporates in June 1991 and begins shipping product in September.

1995

The first OpenText web-based product ships, allowing Yahoo! to search every word on every Web page.

1996

The company holds its Initial Public Offering and is publicly listed on the NASDAQ as OTEX.

2001

OpenText employs more than 1,000 employees at 31 offices as revenue reaches $147 million.

2006

Gartner recognizes OpenText as a global leader in ECM for the first time. The company will continue to be recognized in each consecutive report for 13 years and counting.

2014

OpenText acquires GXS for $1.06 billion, adding both B2B integration services and cloud-based fax services to its market leadership.

2017

OpenText strengthens its position as the market leader in Content Services with the $1.62 billion acquisition of Dell EMC’s Enterprise Content Division, including Documentum.

2019

OpenText acquires Carbonite for $1.45 billion, ensuring cyber resiliency for customers with an end-point platform that offers data protection, endpoint security and digital forensics.

2020

OpenText passes $3B in revenue and more than 14,000 employees in 60+ offices world-wide.
